Odyssey 2010: Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail (PNNST)

Video Segments for Odyssey 2010

The Nomad carries a small digital camera (see Gear List) with him to capture the people, places and breathtaking scenery found along the trail. Every couple of weeks he sends home his camera media card so online photo albums and videos can be created to share with you. Be sure to check back often to view these images and experience the journey through his eyes.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 1

July 19, Glacier National Park, Montana

The Nimblewill Nomad has shouldered his pack for the second trail of Odyssey 2010, a thru-hike of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail. For the Nomad, this will be trail number 9 of the 11 National Scenic Trails. This segment begins at the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, on the U.S./Canada border, as the Nomad begins his journey through Glacier National Park, in Montana, which encompasses over 1,000,000 acres, including parts of two mountain ranges, sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains. He pauses often, along his climb up to Stoney Indian Pass, to share the incredible magnificence of the waterfalls, lakes, and mountain scenery, as he heads on to Waterton Lakes.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 2

July 20, Glacier National Park, to July 25, Eureka, Montana

The Nomad continues his journey through Glacier National Park, in Montana, now making his way up to Brown Pass and then down to Bowman Lake, again sharing some heart-stopping, spectacular scenic beauty with you. Sharing the trail with him are various forms of wildlife; although he has only managed still shots of the bear encounters, here he does share video footage of a deer along the way. On down the trail comes a place called Polebridge, a quaint little village that has no electric power, but runs completely off of generated power. Further along the Pacific Northwest Trail, the Nomad is hiking the Highline Trail, near the Canadian border, looking down on Wolverine Lakes. This segment ends on Sinclair Road, descending to Eureka, Montana, thus ending the Nomad's trek through the Flathead National Forest, and the Rocky Mountains.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 3

July 27, Eureka, Montana, to August 5, Metaline Falls, Washington

This segment begins with the Nomad in the Kootenai National Forest, only a few more days for this portion of the Northwest Pacific Trail before leaving the state of Montana. He pauses for a brief encounter with wildlife before heading on down the trail. The Nomad then passes on into Idaho, and is making a climb up Parker Peak, in the Selkirk Mountain Range, trekking now in the Kaniksu National Forest. As he continues his upward hike, he pauses along the razor back ridge, with 2,000+ foot drop-off to either side, to provide us with some beautiful panoramic imagery. A few days later, as he is finishing out the Selkirk Mountains, he leaves Idaho behind and crosses into Washington, and the beautiful Salmo Priest Wilderness, Colville National Forest, on his way to Metaline Falls.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 4

August 11, Kettle Range, to August 16, Mt. Bonaparte, Washington

This segment finds the Nomad in the Kettle River Range, Washington’s forgotten mountains, named for a major but little-known tributary to the Columbia River. Rising in the sun-baked Okanogan Highlands to heights exceeding 7,000 feet, the Kettle Mountains are an impressive and imposing landmark, with lofty, smooth contours, and rounded ridges, making this a range of gentle giants. Further along we are transported to the Lookout Tower, a manned fire tower located atop the summit of Mt. Bonaparte. The Nomad provides us with a 360 degree view, with narration to explain what can be seen in all direction, in the US and Canada. While visiting the tower, Nomad, and fellow hiker John, are entertained with a string bass solo, performed by Lewis, the young man who has spent his summer manning the tower. Please enjoy the scenery and the music brought to you from the Okanogan National Forest of Washington State.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 5

August 17, Oroville, to August 18, Nighthawk, Washington

This segment begins during the descent from Mt. Bonaparte, where the Nomad pauses to share a view looking down toward Whistler’s Canyon, and a vantage across the Okanogan Valley, where they are headed. From there they make their way to Oroville, then on to the abandoned Great Northern Pacific rail-trail that will get them headed toward the Cascades. The 11-mile trek up the old grade is along the Similkameen River Canyon, taking in Enloe Dam, and the historic landmark of Shanker’s Bend Tunnel, a 1700-foot abandoned railroad tunnel. From the breathtaking scenic views, to the eerie inner ribs of the tunnel, the Nomad continues to bring us right along with him on this trek, as he heads on down the trail to Nighthawk, a once booming mining town at the turn of the century, but now feeling like a ghost town, filled with many vacant buildings and few residents.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 6

August 19, Okanogan Valley, to August 21, Cathedral Pass, Washington

This segment begins with a view of the Okanogan Valley, near the Similkameen River. Next, the Nomad takes us along with him into the Pasayten Wilderness, in the Cascade Mountain Range, where he spends the next 6 days and 5 nights, sharing some beautiful scenery, and a prayer, as he continues his journey along the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 7

August 23 to August 24, Pasayten Wilderness, Washington

This segment contains more video footage of the Pasayten Wilderness, in the Cascade Mountain Range, in the state of Washington, and the folks the Nomad runs across on the trail.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 8

August 27, Ross Lake to August 27, Graybeal Camp, Washington

In this segment the Nomad takes us into the North Cascades National Park, in an old growth forest of incredible, majestic Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 9

August 29, Chilliwack River to September 6, Deception Pass, Washington

This segment begins with the awe of nature's force, sending water crashing and falling over the rocks toward the Chilliwack River. A little further down the trail comes a wondrous adventure, as the Nomad must maneuver a hand-cable car to take himself across the gorge at Chilliwack River. A few days later the Nomad pauses on Innis Road, a Forest Service logging road, to capture the peace and serenity of the surrounding view, looking off toward the Olympic Mountains and San Juan Island, then continuing on down the path to Wickersham. On labor day weekend, in the pouring rain, the Nomad again provides us with some wonderful footage to share the bridge and beaches of Deception Pass and view of Puget Sound.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 10

September 11, Olympic National Park, Washington

This segment begins with the Nomad trekking along Hurricane Ridge, in the Olympic National Park, in Washington. He makes several stops to share spectacular views along the ridge, with clouds rising up the mountain around him. A delightful visitor makes for some adorable footage, as a chipmunk smells something sweet in the Nomad’s backpack. And then on down the trail to Obstruction Point, a vista view of the Olympic Mountains ahead, ending at Eagle Point.

Nimblewill Nomad - Odyssey 2010 - PNT - Part 11

September 14, High Divide to September 21, Cape Flattery, Washington

This segment finds the Nomad at the High Divide, in the Olympic Mountains, of the Olympic National Park, then continuing through the mountains to Bogachiel Peak. Descending out of the mountains, the Nomad is now on the last leg of his odyssey. Come along with him as he traverses the Pacific Ocean coastline during low tide, the only way to reach his destination. Strange and remarkable formations known as "stacks", the rock you walk through called Hole-In-The-Wall, pounding surf as the tide begins to come in, and all too soon comes the end of this journey. Standing on the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, gazing across at Cape Flattery, comes the bitter-sweet end of the PNT adventure.
